Master teacher Arlene Sonday created the Sonday System Reading Program based upon Orton-Gillingham methodology to teach reading from beginning letter and sound recognition through most phonograms. Selected teachers in grades K-6 will use the Sonday System for Tier II and Tier III intervention during the 19-20 school year.<br />

The first day of training was facilitated by reading coaches Jenni Peters, Edra Perry, and Kelly McGough, and reading specialist Fran Box on June 11. The day-long experience introduced teachers to the Sonday System program and materials, as well as an overview of dyslexia and Alabama law related to dyslexia. Feedback from the teachers was exceptionally positive. <br />

What characterizes the professional learning opportunities described by teachers and coaches in the schools they visited is that they’re messy - experiential. The process is similar to the Japanese concept of lesson study. Grade-level and cross grade-level teams are rolling up their sleeves and working together, engaging in the content of what they’re teaching in the classroom and figuring out the best way to deliver it, leaning heavily on the curriculum.</div>

Successful implementation requires significant resources. But there is a payoff for such an investment: Researchers report that teachers who participated in sustained, discipline- specific professional learning that dealt concretely with what they were teaching in the classroom — professional learning that averaged 49 hours across nine separate studies — saw student achievement increases of about 21 percentile points.</div>

This definitely makes me think about our Elementary Math Teachers Cohort and the roll out and implementation of Lucy Calkins Units of Reading. Principals, assistant principals, and coaches have embraced and studied these new curricula, along with teachers. And the most significant part of EMT (Elementary Math Teachers Cohort) is the study of the research behind student learning and understanding. Teachers regularly plan and collaborate in grade level meetings and across the district. This targeted, curriculum-specific professional learning continues to support the learning of teachers <i>and</i> students. </div>

For the past five years, TCS administrators and teacher leaders have met throughout the year as the TCS Administrator Collaborative. We started the Administrator Collaborative so that administrators in our district would have the opportunity to learn together and from each other. We wanted leaders throughout the district to have time to share their ideas with one another and to be able to ask questions of their colleagues. It is important, actually critical, for leaders to continue to learn on a daily basis. That learning doesn’t happen unless it is intentional and planned. Leaders get busy and often put their own learning on a back burner. <br />

Five years ago, I don’t believe we had a common language or shared vision for high-quality instruction. Walkthroughs with feedback that included evidence without judgement were not common. Peer observations were rare. Today, all of these things take place routinely in our schools and departments because we have discussed, read, practiced, and learned together. Through our collaboration, we have instituted important expectations for teachers and administrators through our TCS Educator Effectiveness. As we finish up our fifth year of Administrator Collaborative, take a look back at our learning.<br />

Participants join colleagues in walkthroughs at various schools focusing on specific best practices (content knowledge, well-managed classroom, rigor and relevance, learning targets, positive classroom environment, formative assessments, academic discourse, active engagement, etc.)<br />
After the walkthroughs, participants discuss their walkthrough data and compile appropriate feedback to be given to teachers.<br />

Notice the purpose of the Administrator Collaborative. Our goal was always the same - improve teaching and learning. That must remain a priority for a school system. Our purpose is to educate. Improving teaching and learning is hard work, not for the faint of heart, nor for anyone afraid of getting down in the messy work of learning. I am proud that together, this group worked and learned in order to achieve that goal. Teaching and learning has improved, and it must continue to improve every year. <br />

The word that comes to my mind in describing this school year is <i>growth</i>. Growth in students enrolling and families moving into the district. Growth in student achievement. Growth in student <i>and</i> staff learning. Growth in relationships with students and with one another. <br />
<br />
Teachers, administrators, and academic coaches have worked collaboratively this year to support student growth. In the process, adult learning has increased as well. The result of all that growth was highlighted with the recognition as being the number 2 school district in the state, based on the State Report Card. The life-giving blood for that growth is our teachers. We have the best of the best who, year after year start fresh, striving to make learning and the school experience even better than the year before. TCS is fortunate to have hard working, intelligent, caring employees who have a growth mindset. <br />
<br />
Relationships between and among our staff members have grown. Teachers regularly collaborate and depend on one another for support and constructive feedback. That collaborative spirit has helped to transform our district into a true learning community. We have all learned so much, not just from our reading, research, and professional development, but through our observations and conversations with colleagues. Joy Tyner said it best, "Why would I send our teachers to observe in another district when we have experts right here in our own building?" <br />
<br />
Looking ahead to the future, I know that you will continue your work to support continuous growth of our students and staff. You have the most important jobs in the world. The children, this country, and the future of democracy depend on you. I am confident that Trussville City Schools will continue to be the stellar schools we expect in our community, and that together you will help all of our students grow to become the people they were created to be.<br />

eLearning will offer 40+ professional development (PD) courses beginning June 5th and running through July 23rd, 2019. Most of these courses are 6-weeks long and will award 30 clock hours to graduates.<br />
<br />
All of the courses are completely online with no requirements to be online on any given day or at any given time. The courses are structured in weekly sessions with assignments due each week (readings, activities, discussion sessions). As long as you complete these weekly assignments during the assigned week, you will be fine. If you already have vacation plans, you can work with your instructor to get around the dates you will be without Internet access.<br />

Due to across the board budget cuts, eLearning will have to restrict enrollment to most courses to the first 25 participants signing up - please do not wait until the start date or you might miss out and taking a course or two.<br />

Dr. Kevin Besnoy, Director of ACCESS Virtual Learning, said, " Dr. Cardwell's history of work and commitment to excellence in merging ACCESS programming options with Trussville's existing curriculum is a model for other administrators across the state." She will be recognized at this year’s ACCESS Teacher Day, hosted on the University of Alabama’s campus on May 31, 2019. </span><br />

The students competed in a variety of engineering and leadership activities. <b>The Hewitt-Trussville Engineering Academy placed 2nd overall in the State Competition. </b>We are very proud of our teachers, Jason Dooley and Tom Moulton, and our students and their accomplishments. <b>Architectural Computer Aided Design</b><br />
Students had 4 hours to design a tiny house. The students had to design the tiny house to meet several design constraints. Students had to create an original design and a complete set of drawings. After completing their designs, students had to defend their designs to a panel of judges.<br />

Students had to create a 3D model utilizing the latest engineering software. Students had 4 hours to design a child friendly flashlight. After completing their designs, students had to defend their designs to a panel of judges. <br />

<b>Catapult Design</b><br />
Students had to design a catapult from PVC pipe. Students were scored by how many balls they could successfully shoot into a target.<br />

<b>Children’s Story</b><br />
Students had to write an original children’s story with a technology theme. The book had to be an original creation and include tactile and auditory enhancements for children with disabilities. Millie and her best friend are learning about different engineering structures built by women.<br />

<b>CO2 Dragster Design</b><br />

<b>Engineering Design</b><br />
The Engineering Design competition theme this year was alternative energy. Lucas, Luke, and Alex developed a gravity generator that can generate electricity from a falling weight. This would allow for power to be generated almost anywhere.<br />

<b>Essays on Technology</b><br />
Students were given several news articles concerning internet safety. Students had to read the articles and write a paper defending the side of the issue that they chose.<br />

<b>Extemporaneous Presentation</b><br />
Students were given a choice of 3 different technology topics. They had only 15 minutes to prepare a 3-5 minute presentation. Students then had to present their topic to a team of judges. Nathan’s topic was on the pros and cons of biometric identification.<br />

<b>Forensic Science </b><br />
Students had to utilize forensic science tools to investigate a mock crime scene. Students had to properly document and prepare all of the evidence.<br />

Individuals designed and built a rubber band powered airplane. The planes were scored based on their design binder and the flight time of their airplane.<br />

<b>Photographic Technology</b><br />
Individuals prepared a photographic portfolio. The theme of the portfolio was lighting. Students had to take pictures in different types of light.<br />

Students had to design and construct a device using motors and sensors to simulate a parking lot control system. The team only had four hours to design, build, and program a working inventory management system. They had to be able to transfer packages from holding locations.<br />

<b>Architectural Modeling</b><br />
Students had to design and model of a tiny house that could be easily shipped on standard tractor trailers. Student teams first utilized 3D architectural design software to design their tiny homes. They then had to construct a scale model of their design to present to the judges.<br />

This year's culminating activity was a Math Studio Day on April 24. The teachers worked together to plan a lesson that encompassed the effective mathematics teaching practices that they have studied this school year. The teachers implemented this lesson collaboratively in one classroom. The lesson components consisted of a number talk, an investigative task, and a Math Congress where strategically selected strategies are shared by students to their peers. The teachers anticipated student responses to the tasks and created question prompts to enrich or support the students. Teachers closely monitored a group of students during the investigative task and posed the planned question prompts as needed. At the conclusion of the lesson, teachers participated in a debrief to determine the effectiveness of the lesson and share new learning.<br />

Learning Targets for the day were:<br />

<li>I can observe and reflect upon the collaboratively planned Studio Day math lesson.</li>
<li>I can look for and provide evidence of the Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices embedded in a math lesson.</li>

Regarding the Studio Day, Mrs. Sara Wessel, fourth grade teacher at Cahaba and EMT participant, said, "(This experience) reminded me of the importance of collaboratively analyzing investigations to collect varying perspectives and strategies related to the problems and the importance of using that data to anticipate strategies and compose effective questioning."<br />

Mrs. Chrissy Mauldin, first grade teacher at Paine and EMT participant, wrote: “Studio Day was a great experience. It was exciting to see all the components we have discussed in our Math Cohort Program in action. We have amazing teachers in our system and it was wonderful to see their teaching in action. Now I will be able to take that back to my students.” <br />

After observing the lesson, teachers debriefed and then visited other math classes for shorter walkthrough observations. The afternoon was spent discussing the math curriculum, differentiating a grade specific math task for students, and reflecting on the year. </div>

This intensive professional learning has resulted in consistent implementation of the <a href="https://www.nctm.org/">National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' Effective Mathematics</a> Teaching Practices <a href="https://www.nctm.org/Publications/Teaching-Children-Mathematics/Blog/What-Do-the-Standards-for-Mathematical-Practice-Mean-to-You_/">https://www.nctm.org/Publications/Teaching-Children-Mathematics/Blog/What-Do-the-Standards-for-Mathematical-Practice-Mean-to-You_/</a> . Information gained from surveying the participants of Trussville's 18-19 Elementary Math Teachers (EMT) shows high satisfaction and high implementation of the NCTM practices in the classroom.<br />

One survey respondent wrote: "I loved learning about each piece of the (math curriculum) binder in depth. Taking a full day to learn and practice number talks, investigations, and congress was so beneficial. Being able to discuss with my grade level peers and how we each implement lessons was so practical. This was one of the most beneficial PDs I've had that I could implement the next day!"<br />

Responding to what changes occurred in the classroom because of EMT, a teacher wrote: "My classroom changed so much. I felt that my (math) congress looked different between the beginning and end of the year and I got new philosophies and strategies for helping my students with fluency."<br />

As I grow in my profession, my prayer is that I always look for opportunities to expand my thinking to benefit my students. Again, thank you for this opportunity."<br />

A panel of independent judges reviewed submissions from 94 schools. Winners were selected from each of the eight state school board districts, as well as from private schools from each state region.<br />

Concert Choir, Women’s Chorale and Chamber Choir each went through the 45 minute cycle of warmup, performance and sightreading. The performance judges were from the University of Arkansas, University of Tennessee, Huntingdon College and the University of Alabama at Huntsville.<br />

Points totaling 72-88 qualify as a Superior rating. Each choir received the following scores in sightreading:<br />
Concert Choir - 79, 82, 81, 85<br />
Women’s Chorale - 78,79, 84, 85<br />
Chamber Choir - 84, 85, 84, 86<br />

Enrichment activities are enjoyable and challenging learning experiences that are constructed around students' interests, learning styles, and preferred modes of expression. Research has shown that an enrichment-based approach (rather than drill-and-practice) actually improves student achievement, improves attendance, minimizes suspensions, increases student and teacher engagement, and promotes greater job satisfaction on the part of teachers. Trussville City Schools is working to implement enrichment opportunities for all students, as well as opportunities for students to expand on those areas of personal interest.<br />
